The excellent flavour and typical aspect of the Calahorra Cauliflower show consumers the quality of this vegetable —grown in La Rioja under a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)— which is increasingly sought on both the domestic and international markets.
The Calahorra Cauliflower can be easily distinguished by its green leaves, compact form, white colour, size, absence of granules and delicious flavour. These characteristics are possible thanks to the local climate and the growing methods employed by farmers from a land of rich agricultural tradition and experience.
Painstaking care during growing, harvest and handling guarantee the preservation of the Calahorra Cauliflower until it reaches the consumer’s home. Harvest is carried out manually —a compulsory requirement— and the green leaves are left on the cauliflower to ensure that it will be protected during transit to the warehouse. Transit time is limited to a maximum of 12 hours from the time the cauliflower is picked.
It is then kept at a temperature of 0–5 °C with a high level of relative humidity. The Calahorra Cauliflower is marketed shrink-wrapped or in boxes, depending on market requirements, and always bears the label of the Calahorra Cauliflower PGI.
